1. Compare price per 100 g

Divide the price by the grams and multiply by 100. Amazon usually shows a unit price near the main price. A 50 g pack and a 250 g pack can only be compared this way. Remember that the cheapest figure per 100 g is only a saving if you will use it all before it goes flat.

2. Note the price before the sale

Add the spices you want to your cart or wish list a few days before 8 October and note the prices. That way you know what the discount really is.

3. Check the grade, not just the brand

For cardamom, look for the pod size, such as 8 mm. For pepper, look for words like cleaned, sorted or graded. "Premium" alone tells you very little.

4. Check the seller

Look at "Sold by" under the price. Buying through a brand's official storefront means the pack comes from the brand or its authorised seller.

5. Check the pack date when it arrives

Look at the packing date and best before date as soon as the parcel arrives. FSSAI's advisory for e-commerce food businesses says delivered food should have at least 30 percent of its shelf life, or 45 days, left before expiry. A sale price is no bargain on a pack that is near its date.
